The Canadian government has announced a ban on labels that promote the sale of foods low in carbohydrates.

When the rules take effect in December next year, such content must be listed on the nutrition table for all food and beverage packaging. However, other low-carb-related claims will be forbidden.

'There is no reason from a nutrition point of view to be worried about the amount of carbohydrates that we eat,' said a Canadian health ministry official.

He said the Government had concluded there was insufficient scientific evidence to support low-carb labels. The new rules come as hundreds of low-carb products are being launched in Canada from the US.

A spokesperson for the low-carb Atkins diet took 'exception' to the claims, saying there were 37 studies showing that a low-carb diet is healthy.

The restrictions come into effect next year for large companies and in 2007 for producers with revenues below C$1 million (£433,578).
