BRC celebrates successful defence of milk measure
A vote in Brussels yesterday approved allowing national variations to continue for milk measures, thus saving the British pint from European harmonisation.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC), which lobbied to protect the pint, praised the work of UK MEPs who worked to secure its future, following concerns over the consequences of a European directive.

Over the past three years, the EC has allowed for national variations among EU member states. However, it was calling on all 25 member states to provide certain pre-packed products in specified quantities.

BRC director of food & consumer policy Andrew Opie said: 'Feedback from consumers and retailers has shown that they are happy with the status quo.'

Under the EU's decision-making process, the issue will now pass to national governments for debate and then to the European Council to vote on the amendments. It will finally be passed to the European Commission to agree with the amendments.
