The BRC has said that “politicians must swallow their pride” to avoid a no-deal Brexit after Theresa May’s proposed deal was overwhelmingly rejected by MPs.
The prime minister’s deal was defeated by 149 votes in the House of Commons yesterday after MPs voted by 391 to 242 votes to reject her proposal.
As a result, MPs will vote today on whether to block the UK from leaving the EU without a deal. Depending on the outcome, MPs will potentially gather for another vote on Thursday to determine whether Article 50 is extended to allow the UK more time before exiting the EU.
BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said: “It is the public who will feel the impact of a no-deal Brexit – tariffs, non-tariff barriers and currency depreciation will all push up costs and reduce the choice on the shelves we currently enjoy.
“Businesses are exasperated by the lack of clarity over their future trading arrangements. Hundreds of ships are currently sailing towards Britain without a clear understanding of the tariffs, checks, or documentation requirements, they will face when they arrive. Politicians must swallow their pride and find an agreement that can command the support of the House.”
