Government urged to take action
The British Retail Consortium has launched a hard-hitting campaign in an attempt to stem retail crime.

The awareness drive, SCAR (Stop Crime Against Retail), is set to elevate the issue of retail crime and press the Government and police to take the subject more seriously.

BRC director-general Kevin Hawkins said: 'Retail crime is not victimless. It leaves deep scars, not only on business viability and staff, but also on the community.'

The campaign will also be aimed at changing public perception of retail crime. The BRC is in discussions with celebrities to find a face for the campaign.

The BRC is holding its annual retail crime conference on October 19. Home Office minister Hazel Blears is expected to speak, outlining the Government's reform agenda on retail and the development of a specific national strategy for retail crime.

'At the conference, people will come together and we will use it as an opportunity to share best practice and communicate. We've been making a lot of noise and the message is finally starting to get through,' said a BRC spokesperson.
