Spriegel to work on Global Standards
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has hired ex-Sainsbury's director Geoff Spriegel as director of standards and technical services.

Spriegel will start in June and oversee the BRC's Global Standards, enhancing the existing range and developing products.

BRC Global Standards certification means that a supplier or producer is following best practice for quality, hygiene, product safety and handling goods in a safe and traceable way. There are BRC standards for food, consumer products, packaging, storage and distribution. Most big retailers demand that their suppliers achieve certification before signing a contract with them.

BRC director-general Kevin Hawkins said: 'This is a very important appointment for the BRC and we look forward to Dr Spriegel helping to further enhance the reputation and reach of BRC Global Standards. He is uniquely qualified for the role, with an extensive range of experience and outstanding technical knowledge.'

Spriegel said: 'This is a unique opportunity to join an organisation at a crucial stage in its development. I'm looking forward to the challenge of developing the standards and building on their reputation in the international market.'

Spriegel previously worked as technical director for Sainsbury's and has held senior positions at various food and drink manufacturers including Diageo and St Ivel.
