Tesco launched a virtual egg hunt to tie-in with the Easter holidays. Find the Eggs was an online game built using Google Street View technology. Tesco hid thousands of virtual eggs across UK maps.
To play, customers visited www.tesco.com/find-the-eggs from a desktop computer or smartphone. Once there they entered a postcode and explored the map until they found virtual eggs.
When players had found three eggs they won a chocolate bunny, which could be claimed in-store or online using a digital coupon – the only negative being the requirement to download software for the voucher. Tablet computers were up for grabs too if players uncovered a golden egg. There was a strong social element to the campaign – players were able to access extra features by liking Tesco on Facebook, as well as being prompted to share their activity on Twitter using the hashtag #FindTheEggs.
While campaigns such as this may not directly impact sales, they serve to increase brand sentiment.
