Sales to hit £14.2 billion
Christmas will be the biggest ever for UK supermarkets, according to a report by TNS Worldpanel.

A record£14.2 billion is expected to be spent on household goods over the festive period, with£3.7 billion in Christmas week alone - and 40 per cent of this being spent tomorrow and Friday, according to the report.

TNS Worldpanel research director Edward Garner said: 'Every year, the supermarkets have to strike a fine balance between keeping the shelves stocked and not having too much left over. Retailers must be ready for the big hit we are expecting on Thursday and Friday to ensure there is still enough stock for those shoppers waiting until the end of the working week.

'With the biggest Christmas week ever expected this year, they need to make sure they have enough in the warehouses to service both their internet customers and those turning up to the stores.'

With Christmas day falling on a Monday, shoppers have a full seven days this week to prepare. The TNS study believes that British households will spend on average£580 each over the five week festive period, with£153 in Christmas week alone.
