Tesco powers away in first
Tesco continues to power away at the top of the grocery league as the gap narrows slightly between Asda and Sainsbury's, according to the latest TNS figures.

Tesco's market share increased to 31.1 per cent for the 12 weeks to November 5 - up from 30.1 per cent the previous year. This represents a 9 per cent growth rate.

Asda still retains the number-two slot, with a market share of 16.7 per cent from 16.5 per cent last year, and an annual growth rate of 6 per cent. Sainsbury's share climbed to 15.9 per cent, compared with 15.6 per cent at the same point last year, reflecting an annual growth rate of 7 per cent.

TNS Worldpanel director of research Edward Garner said: 'All the major chains are enjoying growth ahead of the overall market. This apparent paradox can be in part explained by the virtual disappearance of Kwik Save - down from 1.6 per cent share a year ago to 0.2 per cent now, meaning new growth opportunities for the rest of the market.'

The Morrisons-Safeway combination is showing a year-on-year turnover growth, but this is slightly behind the market, so indicates a share reduction of 0.2 per cent.

Waitrose continued to improve, with its share up 0.2 percentage points to 3.9 per cent. Discounter Lidl's share stayed flat at 2.1 per cent but Aldi rose to 2.5 per cent, from 2.3 per cent the previous year.
