Bhs opened a new-look store at the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield last week, which owner Sir Philip Green believes will make the mid-market format an “automatic destination”.

The two-floor, 20,000 sq ft space, which has an emphasis on homewares, marks the latest stage in the development of Bhs, intended to confront mid-market stalwarts such as Next and Debenhams.

Green described the store as having a dramatic entrance, with a ceiling formed of white rafts and womenswear dominating the frontage. A mezzanine has been set back within the shop and houses a restaurant. The homewares offer comprises a series of roomsets.

Green said: “It [the store] lent itself to something different because of its size and so we’ve been able to put a full home offer in and get more in it.” He said the shop has been performing more than 50 per cent ahead of initial targets and the result was encouraging for a wider-scale roll-out.

Green said: “The way the market is moving, it’s going in my favour. Too many people have gone for what I would call cheap and I think the mid market’s opening up again.”

He said “better interiors, better fabrics and a better offer” would ensure that Bhs will be a resurgent force on the high street.
