Department store Beales revealed today that like-for-like sales slumped 6 per cent in the 43 weeks to August 30.

Beales said the performance, which compares with a 6.4 per cent fall for the first 26 weeks of the year, represents an “improving trend” for the ailing department store chain.

Including the comparable performance of its Ealing store, which closed at the end of the last trading year, gross sales were down 14.8 per cent on the previous year.

Beales – which drafted in former Bhs retail director Tony Brown as chief executive in June – said it has implemented a “a number of trading initiatives”, including more promotional activity, to aid its turnaround.

Beales added that it would focus on managing its expenses and asset base.
