Ireland’s Athlone Towncentre scheme opened last weekend with more than 15,000 shoppers converging on the 500 million (£348.3 million) mixed-use development.

The centre, which sits in Ireland’s Midlands, houses 300,000 sq ft (27,870 sq m) of retail over two levels. Retailers present include Marks & Spencer, Next, Tommy Hilfiger, Esprit, Zara and H&M. It also features the first Irish store for French fashion chain Promod.

Athlone Towncentre, which was developed by Gallico Developments, also includes a four-star Sheraton Hotel, 160 apartments and a 1,300-space car park.

“Athlone is now one of the largest retail towns in the country, with only Dublin, Cork and Belfast ranking above it in terms of retail offering,” said Gallico Developments director John O’Sullivan. “This has given consumers an alternative to the soulless out-of-town malls that have been developed in recent years.”
