Fashion e-tailer Asos has enjoyed another bumper Christmas with sales in the nine weeks to January 16 up 118 per cent year on year.

The e-tailer's free delivery weekends and promotions leading up to Christmas will have some impact on its margins, but Asos is confident that it will meet the board’s pre-tax profit expectations in its financial year to March 31.

Sales in the 42 weeks to January 16 have rocketed 108 per cent year on year and it now has 1.2 million active customers, which is up 112 per cent over the past year.

Asos chief executive Nick Robertson said: "We have had another great Christmas. Sales, visitors, conversion and average basket value were all at record levels with the website attracting 5.2 million unique visitors in December alone."

He added: “We remain cautiously optimistic about the outlook for Asos with both young fashion and the internet proving more resilient in the current economic climate. We will continue with our programme of investment, putting in the infrastructure to support continued growth.”
