Asda’s clothing brand George has launched a City suit for women costing just £20.

As Asda chief executive Andy Bond cut the price of thousands of food and household essentials last week, George followed suit by lowering prices on wardrobe essentials.

The City suit is a jacket and skirt or pair of trousers for£20. From January 21, George will also offer an office outfit including a£10 pair of trousers with a free blouse worth£2.50. The£19 men’s suit also launched last week.

George managing director Anthony Thompson said: “In 2009, UK women will need to make very considered decisions when they shop for clothes and are having to save up to get both high quality and value for money outfits. In some cases they can’t afford to get anything new at all.

“Last year, George invested£30 million step changing the quality of our clothing, allowing us to give customers the best quality at the most affordable prices. Classic items like the£20 suit are offering customers real value for money on what they consider as absolute wardrobe essentials they wear every day, rather than being seduced by gimmicky price promotions or disposable fashion."
