Supermarket giant Asda is to sell own-brand furniture in its stores.

The grocer hopes to capture a significant slice of the£9 billion UK home furnishings market.

The George flat-pack and Smart Price ranges will be available in 60 stores by the end of this month.

The ranges include a small folding chair for£6.48 and a leather sofa for£300.

Shoppers in the six Asda Living stores and 12 of the group's larger supermarkets will also be able to view a 65-piece George fine furniture range, which can then be ordered by catalogue.

Asda homewares buying manager Sophie Opie said: 'We reckon our new range will challenge customers' expectations on the quality and value they can expect, not just from a supermarket but also on high street furniture ranges.'
