Asda lost food market share during March, when the rate of growth among all the big grocers fell to its lowest point since 2007.

Asda lost 0.2 percentage points of share to 17.1% in the 12 weeks ending March 21 when it increased sales by 2.7%, Kantar Worldpanel data showed.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s both gained 0.2 points to claim market shares of 30.3% and 16.3% respectively after sales growth of 4.1% and 4.6%.

Morrisons’ sales rose by 7.8% and its market share by 0.5 points to 12.1% while Waitrose’s turnover was ahead by 14.1% to give it market share of 4.1% - up 0.3 points.

The overall year-on-year growth rate of grocers fell to a “pre-recession low” of 3.6%, Kantar reported. The decline coincided with a fall in grocery price inflation from 2.4% to 1.8%.

Kantar Wordpanel retail analyst Fraser McKevitt said: “We can see the dramatic fall in inflation by comparing this month’s figure to March 2009 when inflation was running at 9.1%.

“While this has had a dampening effect on retailer growth, lower inflation brings benefits to customers and the latest figures suggest that shoppers are taking advantage of slower grocery price increases by trading up to more expensive lines such as Tesco Finest.”
