TNS Superpanel director Peter East said: 'This turnaround may be driven partly by increased levels of price promotional activity.'
However, closest rival Sainsbury's also grew market share over the period, from 15.5 per cent last year to 15.9 per cent this year.
Market leader Tesco experienced 11 per cent year-on-year growth, with its share now standing at 30.4 per cent.
East noted that Somerfield's market share increased to 5.8 per cent, mainly as a result of its store acquisitions.
