Asda flies in DVD players for Xmas

Asda has flown in a jumbo jet full of DVD players in order to meet customer demand this Christmas.

A Cathay Pacific cargo flight from Singapore landed at Manchester Airport at 6.30pm on Wednesday.

The Boeing 747 carried 50,000 Pacific 1002 DVD players, which Asda is rushing into stores for the weekend. Priced at£42.82, the grocer expects to sell out within days.

The Pacific brand is exclusive to Asda and parent Wal-Mart. An Asda spokesman claimed the UK was suffering a shortage of DVD players and said: 'People are going mad for them. A lot of parents are buying them for their children to have in their bedrooms. It's not a toy that is top of children's lists this Christmas, it's a DVD player.'

Electricals giant Dixons has also been capitalising on high demand for DVD players. The retailer is offering an APEX player at its eponymous outlets and Currys stores at a promotional price of£29.99. The retailer has heralded it as a 'price breakthrough'.

A Dixons spokesman said: 'We have backed this offer with significant volumes of product. This price position is working very well and the product has been very popular.'

Argos's opening price point DVD player - not part of a promotion - is an Alba model priced at£37.95. A spokeswoman said: 'It's going extremely well.'
