New in-store service will be piloted in the north east
Supermarket chain Asda is to launch an in-store estate agency.

The Homes@Supermarkets service takes the traditional supermarket community notice board one step further, introducing high-tech touch-screen terminals that allow customers to browse properties for sale in their local area.

If shoppers find a suitable property, they can key in their details and someone will contact them to arrange a viewing. To sell a property, customers can type in their phone number and a member of staff will call to arrange a valuation and take photos.

The retailer said its fees will be low and it hopes to save customers£2,000 on average by offering free Home Information Packs (HIP), comprising a survey, search and land registry information. Conveyancing and home insurance will also be available.

Financial services director Gev Lynott said: 'We've brought Asda value to everything from handbags to hamburgers and now we're doing this for house sales as well. For years, postcards on our community boards have helped customers rent their perfect pad - now we're going to help them buy it.'

The new venture will be tested in 10 stores in the north east. If successful, the scheme will be rolled out across the country.
