Apple reported its best third quarter in the company’s history, driven by record sales of Macintosh computers.

In the quarter to June 28, Apple posted net profits of US$1.07 billion (£535.9 million), up on US$818 million (£409.7 million) for the same period last year. In total, 2.5 million Macintosh computers were shipped, up 41 per cent on the same quarter last year.

While revenue climbed from US$5.41 billion (£2.71 billion) to US$7.46 billion (£3.74 billion), gross margin decreased from 36.9 per cent to 34.8 per cent.

Apple sold 11 million iPods during the quarter, up 12 per cent on the same period last year and 717,000 iPhones, compared with 270,000 for the same quarter last year.
