American Golf pitches for Europe

American Golf Discount Centre plans a push into mainland Europe by the end of next year.

The retailer - which has just posted near doubled profits - hopes to open 50 shops on the Continent and 50 more in the UK within seven to 10 years.

Jonathan Fellows, formerly finance director at Bonmarche, has been hired in an identical role to assist with the expansion.

Eastern Spain - where the good weather extends the golf season - is first on the international agenda. Sweden, Germany and the Benelux countries are likely to follow, according to managing director Tony Norton.

American Golf plans to expand country by country, establishing about four stores in each before moving on.

American Golf increased pre-tax profit to£3.1 million, from£1.5 million, for the year ending January 26.

Four new shops, the implementation of EPoS in stores, as well as a marketing campaign following sales dips during the Football World Cup, all helped.

Turnover climbed from£46.1 million to£54.7 million.

Like-for-like, year-to-date sales are already up 17 per cent and it is hoped profits will rise again significantly this year, Norton said.
