Aldi has become the latest retailer to secure space at Telford Shopping Centre as the transformation of the town’s mall gathers pace.

The discounter has agreed a 20-year lease on a 19,500 sq ft store in the new Northern Quarter development, which comprises 70,000 sq ft of retail space.

News of the Aldi deal comes just a week after fashion giants Next and New Look penned pre-let deals to increase their presence in the scheme, which is being revamped by Sovereign Centros and Orion Capital Partners.

The pair are upsizing as part of the new fashion mall, which is due to open in Autumn 2018, alongside a new bus station.

But that is just one of three ongoing development schemes that will transform the 1.2m sq ft centre.

Work on the Northern Quarter, which will be anchored by Aldi, is due to begin during the summer, with the discounter expected to open its store open before Christmas.

A host of new restaurants will also open next month in the newly built Southern Quarter, which lies adjacent to an 11-screen IMAX cinema.

Alexandra Pugh, senior leasing and asset management at Sovereign Centros, said: “Our customers have highlighted the need for a new food store and we are delighted to have secured one of the UK’s fastest growing supermarkets.

“Our continued investment in Telford Shopping Centre, including the new Fashion and Southern Quarter developments, will reaffirm Telford’s status as the region’s dominant retail and leisure location.”
