Ovens manufacturer and home retailer Aga has appointed former House of Fraser chief executive John Coleman as non-executive chairman.

Coleman has taken up the role with immediate effect and will assume chairmanship when Victor Cocker retires after the AGM in May.

Coleman spent 10 years as chief executive of House of Fraser, leading it until its acquisition by Baugur in 2006. Prior to that, he was at Burton Group for 10 years. He is presently non-executive director of Travis Perkins.

Aga chief executive William McGrath said: “We are delighted to welcome someone of John’s calibre to the board. His long corporate career, strong reputation in the City, experience with premium brands and knowledge of the retail sector will be invaluable in achieving the group’s performance targets.”

Coleman said: “I have a great affinity to the Aga brand and am excited about the other brands within the portfolio such as Rangemaster, Fired Earth, Waterford Stanley, La Cornue and Divertimenti. There is real opportunity to grow all parts of the business, both in the UK and internationally, to deliver long-term returns for shareholders. I look forward to working with the team in the newly focused consumer operation.”
