Retailers including Carphone Warehouse founder Charles Dunstone and Tesco corporate and legal affairs director Lucy Neville-Rolfe have been included in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

Dunstone, who in 1989 founded Carphone Warehouse, Europe’s largest independent mobile phone operator, was knighted for services to the mobile communications industry and to charity.

Dunstone is chairman of Carphone Warehouse as well as The Prince’s Trust Trading Board.

Neville-Rolfe, 59, has been made a Dame. She sits on Tesco’s main board and is a non-executive director of ITV, as well as the Carbon Trust. Neville-Rolfe, who leaves Tesco in January, is also deputy chairman of the British Retail Consortium.

Awards presented to individuals from industry and the economy accounted for 12% of the total.

Dunstone told Bloomberg: “I feel immensely proud and flattered to receive this remarkable honour. It’s been 23 years since I first started selling mobile phones out of a flat in Marylebone and whilst I’ve been fortunate and privileged to have experienced success and recognition during that time, I cannot think of a more thrilling and humbling experience than this.”

Other leading figures from the retail industry to be included on the list include Mulberry creative director Emma Hill, who becomes a CBE.

Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton, who designed Kate Middleton’s royal wedding dress, becomes an OBE.
