• Black Friday online spend using Visa up 25% to £760m
  • Store spend down from £1.14bn to £1.13bn
  • Further evidence of shift to online spending during the Sales event

Visa has reported online spending on Black Friday soared 25%, while store sales was slightly down.

More than £760m was spent online using Visa cards on the day, new figures reveal. However, in-store spend was £1.13bn, down from £1.14bn last year.

Spend online was around 40% of all transactions, up from 35% last year. The figure is a significant leap compared to normal online non-food sales, which in Ocotober made up 19% of retail transactions, according to the BRC.

Visa’s figures offer further evidence of shoppers moving away from from in-store spending during the Sales extravaganza to buying products through ecommerce sites.

IMRG and Experian reported that across the industry, ecommerce sales hit a record £1.1bn, up 36% on 2014. In contrast, footfall on Black Friday fell 9.6%, according to analysts Springboard.

Kevin Jenkins, managing director UK and Ireland at Visa Europe, said: “What is clear is that the big winners were those retailers that managed to get their online offering right as consumers raced to mobiles, tablets and laptops to make purchases.”
