Tesco chairman Sir Richard Broadbent is understood to be taking a more hands-on role in the day-to-day running of the grocer following the appointment of a new chief executive.

Broadbent is understood to be working closely with departing chief executive Philip Clarke until new boss Dave Lewis joins on October 1.

Lewis – a Unilever lifer – was appointed chief executive of struggling grocer Tesco on Monday.

Clarke, who has been with Tesco for 40 years, the last three as chief executive, will continue as chief executive until Lewis joins, and will then stay on until January 2015 to hand over the reins.

Clarke had been battling to turn around the fortunes of Tesco amidst the most challenging market grocers have seen for 40 years. However, some felt his strategy was not moving fast enough and he was forced to issue another profit warning on Monday.

Clarke told the BBC that he had “nothing to regret, only positive thoughts”.
