Selfridges named world's best department store by its peers

Selfridges has been voted the world’s best department store by its peers for the third consecutive time.

The premium department store retailer pipped competitors including Harrods, John Lewis and Macy’s to the top honour at the biennial Global Department Store Summit (GDSS), held in Singapore this week.

Selfridges had previously taken the accolade in 2012 and 2010 at the event organised by the Intercontinental Group of Department Stores (IGDS), the trade body for more than 30 of the world’s top department stores.

It is the first store to win the award three times in a row.

Selfridges’ managing director Anne Pitcher said: “We are thrilled that Selfridges has again been recognised as the best department store in the world.

“We have had a terrific couple of years since last winning, and it is a tribute to the commitment of our teams that we have been honoured with the award again this year.

“It gives us even greater impetus to continue to exceed our customers’ expectations and deliver to them an unique and extraordinary shopping experience.”

The GDSS summit in Singapore brought together more than 380 top executives and stakeholders involved with department stores across the globe.

As well as Selfridges it counts department stores from the US to China, Australia and South Africa among its members.
