HMV has appointed former Waterstone’s commercial director Michael Neil to the same position at the entertainment group.

Neil, who will sit on HMV’s board, takes on the role with immediate effect following Gary Warren’s decision to leave HMV to pursue new interests after 25 years with the Group.

Prior to his time at Waterstone’s, Neil has held a number of other senior positions within the retail and books sectors, including managing director at wholesale bookseller Bertrams.

HMV sold Waterstone’s to Russian oligarch Alexander Mamut in May in a bid to pay down some of its debt.

Neil will oversee a fifty-five strong commercial department for HMV UK & Ireland and Fopp.

HMV chief executive Simon Fox said: “Michael brings with him a wealth of commercial insight and retail experience gained across a number of senior positions, and I am delighted to welcome him to HMV at this pivotal time as we continue our transformation into a broad-based entertainment brand.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Gary for his outstanding contribution to HMV across many parts of its business during his twenty-five years with the Group, and to wish him the very best for the future.”
