Zalando (Strategy)
Zalando was founded by university friends Robert Gentz and David Schneider in Berlin in 2008. The business originally focused on selling footwear online but has since become a fully-fledged fashion destination that operates in 25 European markets. The UK – in which it has been present since 2010 – currently only accounts for a very small proportion of that. It had almost 50 million active customers in 2023.

However, sales declined 1.5% to €10.14bn (£8.83bn), allowing for currency fluctuations, for the financial year to 31 December 2023 (FY2023) as Zalando focused on profitable growth amid a challenging economic environment.
