Irish bookseller Hughes & Hughes is considering ramping up its UK retail business.

The retailer will open two units at Heathrow Terminal 5 on March 27, but is mulling further launches in other UK airports or potentially railway stations, to take on WHSmith.

Hughes & Hughes managing director Tony Macantee said: “We are interested in going into the UK business, probably on the travel side. There are plenty of airports in the UK.”

But he stressed that additional sites had not yet been identified. The retailer has one UK store in London City Airport.

Hughes & Hughes has 12 stores in The Republic of Ireland and is to open a branch at Dublin’s Dundrum Town Centre.
