Spanish department store chain El Corte Inglés is rolling out a contactless payment system that will mean shoppers can pay using contactless cards and NFC-enabled phones.
The retailer, which is the fourth biggest department store chain in the world, has installed more than 5,200 contactless terminals so far which is 25% of its total. By the end of 2014 it expects 60% of its terminals to be contactless. The retailer is working with Visa Europe to provide the serivce.
Contactless payment means shoppers can hold payment cards against a reader and have their account immediately debited. Phones that have the technology embedded can also be used to pay in this way. A pin is needed for purchase over £20 or 20 euros.
El Corte Inglés joins UK retailers including Boots, Waitrose and M&S in offering a contactless payment service.
