JD Sports has completed its €26.5m (£20.9m) deal to acquire beleaguered Dutch chains Perry Sport and Aktiesport from Unlimited Sports Group.

The UK retailer, which has had a presence in the Netherlands since 2013, said today it has had “unconditional clearance” from Dutch competition authorities and formally finalised the deal.

The tie-up, which first emerged earlier this month, has come about after Unlimited Sports Group was declared bankrupt last month.

Aktiesport and Perry Sport have 187 stores across the Netherlands, but 55 of the stores will close “imminently” after the leases were terminated.

JD first entered the Netherlands when it acquired Dutch retailer Setpoint.

JD, which has more than 800 stores across the UK and Europe, has been eyeing European expansion and last year boss Peter Cowgill vowed to have a store in every major European city.
