Sound Control, the UK’s biggest musical instruments retailer, has collapsed into administration.

The 26-store business, which generates annual sales of£50 million, was hit by the rise of e-tailers and attempts to sell it came to nothing.

John Reid and Bill Dawson of Deloitte have been appointed administrators of Sound Control. 10 shops have been shut immediately, as have telesales and online sales operations, and 163 of Sound Control’s 338 staff have been made redundant.

Reid said discussions were under way with potential buyers. The remaining 16 stores will continue trading.

Sound Control’s head office is in Dunfermline in Fife.
