Sainsbury's share improved from 15.3 per cent to 15.4 per cent a month ago, although it is still 0.4 percentage points down on the retailer's share of the market a year ago.
Morrisons' eponymous business enjoyed a rise in market share of 1.2 percentage points, but the retailer's share was brought lower by Safeway's performance - down 2.5 percentage points. TNS communications director Edward Garner said: 'The net effect is that the combined fascias have declined from 14.7 per cent to 13.4 per cent. The key question is when will this decline halt and the proven merits of the Morrisons strategy bear fruit?'
