A partnership between Crest Nicholson Developments and J Sainsbury has been chosen to redevelop a major site in the centre of Aylesbury.
The£100 million mixed-use scheme, which includes 20,000 sq m of retail space, has been approved by Aylesbury Vale District Council.
At present, the 4-hectare site south of Exchange Street is occupied by a civic centre and car park. The proposed scheme will connect Market Square and Hale Leys Shopping Centre to the north with the canal basin to the south. It will combine a destination shopping centre, housing and leisure facilities with a new civic centre for the Buckinghamshire town.
The proposals include a 8,360 sq m department store, a Sainsbury's supermarket, 13,935 sq m of retail space in a curved shopping arcade linked to the Hale Leys centre and a 750-space car park. In addition, new apartments will be built overlooking the Grand Union Canal.
Crest director Ian White said: 'Our scheme is designed to naturally integrate with the facilities in Aylesbury, while providing an extra dimension and focus to the town firmly positioning it as a destination centre attracting people from all over the region.'
The overall scheme has been designed by Bernard Engle Architects and Planners. CB Hillier Parker is advis-ing Aylesbury Vale District Council, while Hartnell Taylor Cook, Colliers CRE and Bucknall Austin are acting for the developers.
