Single price point retailer Poundland has confirmed it has acquired eight former Peacocks shops and is in discussions to take on more.

Poundland, which has 389 stores, said the first three former Peacocks shops will open in Seacroft, Haringey and Newmarket on April 5.

More will open in Yate, Brighton, Dartford, Falkirk and Hoxton. The eight new stores will give Poundland about 44,000 sq ft of additional selling space. 220 jobs will be created

The retailer said it is “in discussions with landlords for further locations across the UK”.

Poundland chief executive Jim McCarthy said:  “Poundland has grown significantly over the past 12 months and we will continue to open new stores creating local employment opportunities.

“We are delighted to bring our unique and well proven single price discount proposition and provide amazing value every day to thousands of new customers in these towns.”

Peacocks collapsed into administration in January. 388 stores were acquired by Edinburgh Woollen Mill some weeks later. Sister chain Bon Marche was bought in a prepack deal by Sun European Partners.
