Moss Bros is understood to have approached former BAA retail director Barry Gibson about the role of chairman.

The menswear retailer is believed to be close to appointing a chairman to replace Keith Hamill, who will leave following the failed£40 million takeover of the business by Baugur.

Hamill is keen to appoint a successor before the retailer’s AGM on June 25.
Baugur abandoned its 42p-a-share offer for Moss Bros last month, blaming stake-building in the menswear retailer by Laura Ashley.

Gibson worked at Littlewoods in 1970, before moving to the Burton Group in 1979 and then BAA in 1988.

He has non-executive roles at National Express, Homeserve and William Hill and is chairman of the Retail Trust.
