Manchester city council is restricting the activities of chuggers to make the city more attractive to shoppers.

The council will create four zones in which the street fundraisers can operate and restrict their number to five per zone, The Times reported.

Chuggers will also have to limit their collecting to specified times. They will be allowed to raise funds on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays but not at weekends or during evenings.

Other city councils will monitor the effectiveness of the Manchester scheme. At present there are voluntary agreements in place to govern chugging in 39 other council areas.
