Shoppers clashed in their rush to secure a bargain at the opening of discount grocer Lidl’s new store in Southall yesterday.

Hundreds of shoppers who were eager to snap up cut price products such as TVs and sewing machines suffered minor injuries in their rush. The store’s security guards closed the main doors after stands were knocked down by the thronging crowds. Queues then formed outside the store and way out onto the high street.

A Lidl spokesman said: “It has been a very, very busy store opening. Our security staff have had to close the doors from time to time to limit the numbers of people inside the store. I have no knowledge of fighting.”

A police officer was posted to the area after the fracas.
