Leicester tunes in to crack retail crime

Shop staff in Leicester have got themselves on the right wavelength to catch shoplifters.

Staff at more than 100 shops in the city centre have been given radios that link up to new police handsets. When well-known shoplifters are seen, an alert can be sent out across the radio system and CCTV cameras can locate the offender.

Until now, shop staff had to ring the police control room, which would then pass information on to local police.

However, the new system, which has been paid for by Leicester City Centre Crime and Disorder Action Team, cuts directly through to the nearest police officer.

The system was installed three weeks ago and has already led to the arrests of three prolific shoplifters.

Estimates suggest that shoplifting makes up 20 per cent of all city centre crime in Leicester.
