Tesco and Carrefour are among the final four bidders for Poland’s Zabka retail chain, it is understood.

One source told Reuters: “There are four bidders left, two strategic [investors] and two financial [investors].”

Zabka operates more than 2,300 stores in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Czech Republic based Penta Investments is understood to be considering four potential buyers. Josef Janov, managing partner at Penta, said the final decision on the sale would be made in January.

Tesco already has a strong presence in Poland and Czech Republic. Poland is already its second largest European market in terms of sales and profits, and in the Czech Republic’s capital Prague it opened its first standalone F&F store this year.
