Two American retailers reported full-year results this week.

Petcare retailer PetSmart increased total sales by 5.4% to $5.34bn (£3.57bn), taking into account a hit of $8.3m (£5.32m) from foreign currency fluctuations.

Comparable store sales climbed 1.6% and services sales increased 9.2% to $575m (£368.6m). Net income increased to $198m (£126.9m).

Office retailer Staples recorded a 5.2% increase in total company sales to $24.3bn (£15.58bn) for the year to January 30. On a like-for-like basis sales fell 8%. Operating income rose 0.8% to $1.4bn (£897.6m), while net income dropped 8.3% to $739m (£473.8m). This year, the retailer expects total company sales to increase in the low single digits compared with 2009.
