Carrefour has reported a 6.3% rise in second-quarter sales to €24.92bn (£20.7bn).

During the first six months of 2010 Carrefour’s sales rose 5.9% on last year, up to €48.88bn (£40.5bn). Trading conditions in Europe continued to be tough, with the weakening euro and restructuring of Belgian operations affecting performance.

Poor sales in Europe were offset by strong performances in emerging markets.

Like-for-like sales in Brazil, for example, increased 10.1%. Carrefour has said it will acquire 51% of Chinese hypermarket chain Baolongcang, a main operator near Beijing.
