Furniture chain Lombok is to open its first concession in department store House of Fraser as it seeks to expand cautiously.

The retailer will open a 3,000 sq ft concession at House of Fraser’s Oxford Street flagship next week, and will sell on the department store’s website.

Lombok managing director Stuart Lewis said the move will enable Lombok to appeal to a new customer base.

Lewis said: “We’re taking a cautious approach to expansion in the marketplace. We want to try different formats to understand how we can move the business forward.”

Lewis said if the concession is successful, a roll-out to more House of Fraser stores was likely. At present Lombok, which trialled its first pop-up shop over Christmas in St Albans, has 12 stores located in London and the South East.

“We’re working closely with House of Fraser. We want to develop a relationship,” said Lewis.

He added that trading is tough but that Lombok is “in line with the market”. He said the second half had “not been as strong as the first”, but added that Lombok had a “very good week” last week, when the retailer launched its summer Sale.

Lewis added: “We’re close to where we’d hoped to be but it would be great if consumer confidence perked up a bit.”
