It was power to the people as Ao.com’s vacuum cleaner sales rose 40% in response to the EU’s energy-efficiency legislation.

Panic-buying is usually triggered by the changeable weather in the UK, such as when a snow storm looks likely to trap people in their homes without food.

But in the past week, household electricals etailer Ao.com witnessed consumers panic-buying vacuum cleaners.

Ao.com revealed it cleaned up on vacuum sales last week, recording a 40% rise before EU legislation kicked in on August 31 that stops some of the most powerful machines being sold in the UK as part of an energy-efficiency drive.

Customers were stocking up predominantly on cylinder cleaners. Ao.com reassured customers: “Although they may need to lose power, they won’t lose performance”. Good to know.
