Supermarket giant Tesco is set to roll out electronic shelf labels to all of its stores over the next two years, Retail Week can reveal.

The supermarket has launched a multi-year partnership with Chinese retail technology firm Hanshow to deliver electronic shelf labels to its approximately 3,000 stores across the UK.
The phased rollout is expected to take two years and will begin in four stores – one Express and the large stores – already using the technology following an earlier pilot.
The retailer said the new shelf labels will “support Tesco’s sustainability agenda by replacing paper labels in stores” and “will also simplify daily routines for colleagues, saving them from manually replacing labels when prices or promotions change”.
Tesco UK operations managing director Kevin Tindall said: “The rollout of digital shelf labels marks an important step in the modernisation of our stores, delivering benefits for both customers and colleagues.
“Moving to a digital system will not only support our sustainability ambitions by significantly reducing paper use across the Tesco estate, but it will also mean that our colleagues can focus on what matters most – serving our customers.”
Liangyan Li, senior vice president and head of global sales at Hanshow, said: “Hanshow is proud to support Tesco’s digital transformation journey through the rollout of electronic shelf labels across its store network.
“This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to improving store efficiency, enhancing the customer experience, and building a more sustainable retail environment through digital innovation.
“We look forward to working closely with Tesco to deliver a scalable and future-ready foundation for smarter store operations.”
Tesco is following other retailers like WHSmith, Lidl, Co-op, Asda, Morrisons and Waitrose in digitising its shelf labelling.
