Tesco has promoted the founder of its Blinkbox video-on-demand service, Michael Comish, to the new role of group digital officer.

Comish, previously chief executive of Blinkbox, will lead a new team of more than 300 staff to create a “customer-led approach” to its online services division.

Comish, who will be based at Blinkbox’s new 30,000 sq ft headquarters in Clerkenwell, London when it opens later this year, will have responsibility for the video streaming site, its Clubcard TV arm, ebook business Mobcast and digital music service We7, according to The Drum.

Comish said: “We’re going really fast on this. We’re launching three products this year and our new development centre will be open in autumn.”

The new Blinkbox office is being fitted out and will include a room containing every model of TV, set-top box and games console to ensure its services run smoothly on each.

The London offices will also focus on digital user experience design and software engineering for devices including mobile, tablet and connected TV.

Tesco will launch new services Blinkboxmusic and Blinkboxbooks later this year. Blinkboxbooks is headed by former Facebook head of retail for Europe, the Middle East and Africa Gavin Sathianathan, and Blinkboxmusic is headed by the former head of Sainsbury’s digital entertainment unit Mark Bennett, who has also previously worked at EMI and Warner Music.
