Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s is in the market for a new chair, having instructed headhunters to begin searching for a replacement for Martin Scicluna.
Scicluna is set to step down from his role having been in post as chair at the retail giant since the spring of 2019. Sainsbury’s has started the process of replacing him, according to Sky News.
Under City corporate governance rules, Scicluna won’t be “timed out” of his role until late 2027, which would be the ninth anniversary of him joining the retailer’s board, though it has been reported that he could step down from the business at the company’s annual general meeting next year.
In his time as chair, Sainsbury’s has navigated the Covid pandemic, the collapse of its proposed merger with Asda and a return to a food-focused strategy under chief executive Simon Roberts .
Sky News reported that the search for a new chair will be led internally by Sainsbury’s senior independent director Adrian Hennah and it was unclear if any of the retailer’s existing board would “throw their hat into the ring” for the role.
Former Marks & Spencer co-chief executive Katie Bickerstaffe and former Unilever marketing director Keith Weed both currently sit on the board.
