Lidl is set to invest £600m into opening more than 50 new supermarkets across the UK over the next year.

The German discounter said its expansion plans are expected to generate almost 2,000 new jobs across the country.

Lidl is preparing new sites in Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire over the summer months.

The retailer said it was supporting its rapidly expanding store estate with investment into its logistics infrastructure. 

It reported that construction of its new warehouse in Leeds was “progressing well” with operations due to begin next year.

The retailer has submitted plans to slightly extend and join the warehouses in its Belvedere distribution site.

Lidl GB chief executive Ryan McDonnell said: “As we grow, we want to positively impact our British communities. We’re not just opening doors, we’re unlocking regional growth. 

“Our expansion translates directly into high-quality jobs and gives British suppliers the certainty they need to invest in the future.
