Could the UK grocery market be headed for a new era of consolidation?

Given the ongoing bifurcation of the old big four, the rise of the discounters, and a more business-friendly regulator, the conditions appear right for a potential supermarket mega merger.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s are on the march, while Aldi and Lidl go from strength to strength. That leaves both Asda and Morrisons mired in turnarounds and losing ground. Taking all that into account, and with a more merger-friendly CMA in place, could the grocery sector soon see some consolidation?
