A campaign group is mounting an operation to receive compensation for consumers sold products implicated in the horse meat scandal.

The Horsemeat Action Group is campaigning for shoppers who bought “mislabelled beef” to be compensated.

The group is fronted by a no-win, no-fee lawyer who secured £20m from retailers including Argos and Land of Leather in 2010 for people burned by “toxic” sofas, The Sun reported.

A spokesman for the group said: “The Sale of Goods Act states supermarkets are liable to pay compensation for mis-describing food they sold, whether they knew it or not. It’s not enough to say sorry.”

A share of any compensation won by the action group will go to Christian charity The Trussell Trust.

A raft of retailers, restaurants and suppliers including Tesco, Aldi, Asda, Findus and The Co-operative have apologised to customers after being implicated in the horse meat scandal in which beef products containing horse meat were removed from shelves.
